Greetings to All
The Lane County Stand Down Executive Committee had a Zoom meeting on Thursday, May 14th. It was thoroughly discussed if this year’s Stand Down would be safe for all to be held on September 25th. Based upon the Governor’s Three Phase plan, including not allowing any large events through September, it was decided to cancel the 2020 LaneCounty Stand Down at the Lane Events Center.
The staff at the Lane Events Center did provide us with alternative dates in October and November, but it was determined that rescheduling was not an option. We felt that maintaining social distancing, sanitization regulations, and ensuring the safety of our staff, volunteers, exhibitors, and all of the Veterans in attendance would be almost impossible.
We are working on the details for holding two mobile Outreach Stand Downs. The confirmed dates and locations are:
Eugene Elks on Saturday, October 10th
Springfield Elks on Saturday, November 7th

The Lane County Stand Down acquired a 25’ x 8’ trailer that will function in many ways, to include preparing meals to go, distributing supplies, or possibly provide space for limited services (to be determined).
Each Outreach Stand Down will provide “to go” meals, pet food, and limited supplies (i.e., blankets, sleeping bags, tarps, warm clothes, shoes and/or boots, personal care items, etc.). If feasible, we will attempt to provide flu shots and other medical services.
This will not be easy, but anything worthwhile, is worth the effort. Your understanding and full support will be totally appreciated. Even with some funding and major donations not being available this year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, we believe we can support the two mobile Outreach Stand Downs.
Any financial support will be greatly appreciated and used to the fullest extent for this year’s Veteran’s Stand Down.
Be assured, everyone on the Stand Down Executive Committee will be doing everything in our power to ensure our Veterans will have a Stand Down this year.
There will be more information provided as time goes on via our web site (www.lanecountystanddown.org

Our Mission

One of the biggest objectives of the annual Stand Down is to reach veterans who do not know that they are eligible for VA programs, and could very easily claim these benefits. Stand Down services are sometimes referred to as “Veterans helping Veterans” and “Giving a hand up, not a hand out.” We are proud of our Vets, proud of their sacrifice, dedication and service. Stand Down is just one small way we can recognize our debt to our heroes.

Stand Down was a term first used to describe the relief of a military unit on the front lines. By moving the unit to the comparative safety of the rear, it could rest, eat hot food, train, and re-equip before going back into action. Today, Stand Down is the annual celebration where local veterans are exposed to a variety of exhibits, and programs, many of which are unknown by the average veteran. A Stand Down operates at several levels; For Veterans and their families, a variety of programs from the VA, local support organizations, and fraternal organizations are exhibited. For the homeless, there are basic services, haircuts, clothes, and a hot meal. Housing and medical programs are offered as well.
